Meet Dr. Jane Baxter

Jane Baxter, Ph.D., C.P.T., is one of the top Washington, DC therapists.  She is also an eating disorder psychotherapist and certified physical trainer who has developed an innovative approach to improving patients physical and mental health simultaneously.  She is ranked one of the top Washington, DC eating disorder therapists by Washingtonian magazine.

A specialist in binge eating and other addictions, Baxter has proven that patients can train their brains the same way they train and strengthen their bodies. Her psychotherapy sessions unite physical workouts and fitness instruction with traditional talk therapy in a unique treatment process she calls PsychFit. Patients talk out their problems while working out on a treadmill and doing slow-motion weight training in Baxter’s combination office-gym.

Baxter began developing the basic PsychFit concepts in the early 1990’s while working as a counselor for addicts, DWI offenders and runaway youths at treatment centers in the nation’s capitol. After earning her Master’s in Social Work, she went on to become a Ph.D. while earning certifications in personal training and sports nutrition from the International Fitness Professionals Association.

Recognizing that vigorous exercise releases the same feel good neurotransmitters as antidepressant drugs like Prozac and Paxil, Baxter began developing and offering individualized treatment plans featuring her unique blend of psychotherapy and fitness instruction. Her approach was so successful that in 2003 she founded PsychFit, Inc. to bring this successful methodology to a broader audience.

Jane Baxter’s career includes stints at the National Institutes of Health and Department of Defense. She has been an Adjunct Professor and Clinical Supervisor at the University of Maryland, teaching classes in addictions. Since 1996 she has been in private practice in Washington, DC, specializing in family, couples, individual and group therapy.

Dr. Jane Baxter is known as one of the top Washington, DC therapists in the area.  She received her Ph.D. in Clinical Social Work and M.S.W. from the University of Maryland and her Bachelors in Psychology from Bucknell University. She studied abroad at Institut d’Etudes Européennes in Paris, and the London Campus of Ithaca College.
